Starting your books

    Why keep books at all

The law requires them as soon as you invoice — but you don't keep them for the tax office. You keep them to know, every month, whether you're making money, and to prove it the day a bank, a partner or a buyer asks.

    The fiscal year

Your books live in one-year slices: the . Everything recorded belongs to a , which opens, fills up, then closes for good. In Switzerland it often follows the calendar year — nothing forces it to.

    The day-one photo

Before the first , you need the starting state: what the company owns and owes on day one. These are the . Brand-new company? The photo can boil down to the paid-in capital.

    Three ways to start

Starting from scratch: two minutes. Coming from Bexio: the import takes over your history to the cent. You have an Excel file or an export from another tool: the wizard reads it. In all three cases, you're guided.

      Set the opening balances

Enter the day-one photo and lock it — or mark it "not needed" if you're truly starting from zero. The tile turns green: your books have a starting point.

    Going deeper

The chart of accounts, without fear

Accounts are numbered drawers, ordered the same way across Switzerland (SME chart): 1xxx what you own, 2xxx what you owe, 3xxx what you sell, 4-6xxx what you spend. The app picks the drawer — you check.

    With or without a fiduciary

BeMyTalent keeps the books day to day; a fiduciary can review, close the year, optimise your taxes. Many do everything themselves, others delegate the closing. Both work — and they can read your books right here.

Put it into practice on your numbers
