Leaving Bexio without losing anything: the migration guide

By Michael Dusong · Updated 11.08.2026

The number one reason people stay with software that no longer suits them isn't attachment — it's the fear of losing their history. This guide explains exactly what is carried over when you migrate from Bexio to BeMyTalent, how, how long it takes, and what it costs (spoiler: potentially nothing).

What is carried over — and at what level of detail

Most accounting software switches are done “at the balances”: the opening balances are carried over as of 1 January and the history stays in the old tool. That's the legal minimum, but you lose the depth: no more multi-year comparisons, no more detail of past entries.

    BMT carries over the detail:

    • Complete journal entries, fiscal year by fiscal year — the import has been verified to the cent across 8 real fiscal years.
    • Chart of accounts exactly as you structured it.
    • Contacts (clients, suppliers).
    • Balances and carry-forwards checked against your Bexio year-end closings.

The check is simple and verifiable: after the import, your balance sheet and P&L in BMT must be identical to Bexio's, to the cent. If a difference appears, it is listed — not hidden.

The soft transition: both tools in parallel

You don't have to leap into the void on 1 January. During the transition, BMT can keep pushing to Bexio, which lets you run both in parallel while you confirm everything is right — then switch Bexio off when you're at ease. Your fiduciary (Swiss accounting firm) can check both sides during this period.

    The three ways to migrate

    1. On your own — free, included in the trial

You export your Bexio data, import it into BMT, and the tool checks the balances. It's doable during the one-month free trial, no card: if the result doesn't convince you, you've paid nothing and lost nothing.

    2. Assisted — packages by size

If you'd rather have someone do it with you (or for you):

    PackagePriceFor whom
EssentialCHF 290Solo / micro: 1–2 fiscal years, simple chart of accounts
CompleteCHF 490Small business: several fiscal years, payroll to carry over
IntegralCHF 890SME: deep history, inventory, mandates, special cases

    3. Through your fiduciary

Your fiduciary stays in control: dedicated access, balance checks, sign-off on the year-end closing. BMT doesn't replace your fiduciary — it takes the data entry off their plate.

    How long does it take?

For a simple business: the import itself is a matter of hours, not weeks. The classic sweet spot is the start of a VAT quarter — but thanks to the detailed import, a mid-year switch stays clean.

What you gain on the other side

Once migrated, the logic changes: you drop in your invoices, BMT prepares the entries, reconciles your payments, prepares your VAT and your payroll — you approve. Supplier payments go out as pain.001 files (validated by SIX), invoicing is QR-bill based, and the Planned vs Actual dashboard compares your figures to your forecast continuously. All of it, everything included from CHF 29/month — the detailed comparison is here: BMT vs Bexio.

And if one day you want to leave: your data is exportable at any time, in full. We don't replace one lock-in with another.

    Checklist before migrating

    1. Export your data from Bexio (entries, contacts, chart of accounts).
    2. Note your closing balances for the last fiscal year (balance sheet + P&L).
    3. Create your BMT trial account (1 month free, no card).
    4. Import, then compare balance sheet and P&L to the cent.
    5. Run both tools in parallel for a few weeks if you want belt and braces.
    6. Tell your fiduciary — give them access.
    7. Cancel Bexio at the renewal date only once everything is verified.

    FAQ

Do I lose my history when leaving Bexio?

Not with BMT: the entries are carried over in detail, fiscal year by fiscal year — verified to the cent across 8 fiscal years. You keep your multi-year comparisons.

    Can I migrate mid-year?

Yes. Because the history is carried over in detail (not just the balances), a mid-year migration stays consistent. The start of a VAT quarter remains the most comfortable moment.

What happens to my Bexio subscription during the transition?

You keep it while you verify: BMT can push to Bexio during the overlap period, then you cancel at the renewal date.

Does my fiduciary have to agree?

Involving them is strongly recommended — they keep access and check the balances. Many appreciate no longer doing the data entry.

    Is the assisted migration mandatory?

No. The self-service import is free and included in the trial. The packages (CHF 290 / 490 / 890) are a convenience service, not a toll.
